Oil leak - common causes

An oil patch under the car is rarely harmless - it usually means one of the gaskets or seals has worn out.

Possible causes

  • Worn sump or valve cover gasket - the most common cause
  • A loose or damaged oil filter
  • A worn crankshaft oil seal

Checking your oil level regularly helps you catch a leak before it turns into a serious engine problem.
