Is it dangerous to keep driving with a clicking shaft?

Not critical immediately, but a worn joint will eventually fail completely, which can cause loss of drive to that wheel — repair before it worsens.

Can just the CV joint be replaced instead of the whole shaft?

On some vehicles yes, but on many modern designs the shaft and joints are sold as a complete assembly — check what’s available for your specific vehicle.

What is the shaft made of?

Forged or machined steel, with CV joints at each end.

Signs of a faulty part

If you notice any of the following, the part likely needs replacement:

Clicking or clunking noise, especially when turning or accelerating
Vibration that increases with speed
Grease visible flung around the wheel well (torn CV boot)

Installation information

Requires removing the wheel and disconnecting from the hub and gearbox/differential — always check for correct seating and torque the retaining nut to the specified value.

Frequently asked questions

This is a classic sign of a worn outer CV joint — the joint has to work at more of an angle when turning, which is when wear becomes audible.

No complaints about Evro Trans itself, everything's fine. But the delivery..... It felt like the order was being carried by turtles. 4 days from Riga to Daugavpils. Judging by the tracking, the parcel just sat somewhere behind a shed for 3 days, then they found it and delivered it the next day. I think that's why I won't be ordering there again.

Bought a front fender for my car. I liked it! After payment they sent more than 20 photos of the problem areas, and it was packed very securely - took a while to unwrap.
