Engine overheating - what to check

If the temperature gauge climbs above normal, there's usually one specific part in the cooling system that's stopped working.

Possible causes

  • A stuck thermostat - the engine overheats even at steady speeds
  • A failed water pump - coolant stops circulating
  • A radiator leak or blockage - not enough coolant left in the system

Overheating isn't something to put off - driving on with a hot engine can turn into a far more expensive repair.
